Blood pressure does not stay the same all the time &#8211; it changes to meet your body’s needs. If blood pressure remains high, it can lead to serious problems like a heart attack, stroke, heart failure or kidney disease.</p>
<p><strong>Measuring Blood Pressure</strong></p>
<p>Blood pressure is usually measured by an instrument called a sphygmomanometer. It is best to measure blood pressure when you are relaxed and sitting or lying down.</p>
<p>Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers, such as 120/80. The larger number indicates the pressure in the arteries as the heart squeezes out blood during each beat. It is called the systolic blood pressure. The lower number indicates the pressure as the heart relaxes before the next beat. It is called the diastolic blood pressure.</p>
<p><strong>High Blood Pressure</strong><br />

There is no ideal blood pressure reading. The following figures for clinic blood pressures can be used as a guide:</p>
<p>    * Normal blood pressure: less than 120/80<br />
    * High/Normal: between 120/80 and 140/90<br />
    * High: equal to or more than 140/90<br />
    * Very high: equal to or more than 180/110</p>
<p>High blood pressure usually does not give warning signs. You can have high blood pressure and feel perfectly well. The only way to find out if your blood pressure is high is by having it checked regularly.</p>
<p><strong>Controlling High Blood Pressure</strong></p>
<p>If blood pressure remains high it can lead to serious problems. You will be more at risk of these problems if you smoke, are overweight, are physically inactive, have diabetes, have high blood cholesterol, are socially isolated and/or suffer from depression.</p>
<p>Lifestyle is very important to help to control high blood pressure and its associated risks. There are ways you can help to control or prevent high blood pressure. Medications may also be needed and, in some instances, a number of medications may be required long term.</p>
<p><strong>Have your blood pressure checked regularly</strong></p>
<p>If your blood pressure is normal and you have no personal or family history of high blood pressure, a check every two years and during routine visits to your doctor is recommended. If your blood pressure is high-normal (or higher) or you have a personal or family history of high blood pressure, stroke or heart attack, it is best to have it checked more frequently. Be advised by your doctor.</p>
<p><strong>Be active every day</strong></p>
<p>Establish or maintain at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on five or more days each week (150 minutes per week minimum). This can be accumulated in smaller bouts of 10 minutes or longer, if this is more convenient. Moderate intensity physical activity is activity that causes a moderate noticeable increase in depth and rate of breathing while still being able to whistle or talk comfortably. This may include brisk walking, cycling, low-paced swimming or anything that you enjoy that requires the use of your major muscle groups. Some types of exercises, such as lifting heavy weights, should be avoided if you have high blood pressure. Check with your doctor before starting a new activity or increasing your level or intensity. Be active safely: build up your levels of activity gradually.</p>
<p><strong>Enjoy Healthy Eating</strong></p>
<p>Healthy eating is particularly important in controlling high blood pressure and reducing your risk of heart disease. Enjoying a variety of foods from the different food groups is the key to healthy eating.</p>
<p>Healthy eating is about choosing mainly plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits and legumes (dried peas, dried beans and lentils); wholegrain bread and cereals; moderate amounts of lean meats, poultry, fish and reduced fat dairy products; and moderate amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils and fats.</p>
<p>Reducing salt intake can also help control high blood pressure or help avoid high blood pressure altogether. To reduce salt intake, eat plenty of vegetables, fruit and legumes; choose low salt wholegrain bread and cereals; avoid seasonings, processed foods and takeaway foods (which are high in salt); and avoid adding salt to cooking or at the table.</p>

The first documented demonstration of blood transfusion was between two dogs by Richard Lower in 1665.</p>
<p>Landsteiner discovered the ABO Blood Group system in 1901, which is one of the most important landmark discoveries in the Transfusion Medicine. In the 1970s, voluntary donors were accepted as blood donors. These donors were later on found to be having high-risk activities and the recipients were found to be suffering from liver diseases. This lead to the discovery of Hepatitis B transmitted by donated blood. Since then testing for the hepatitis B antigen was implemented and this together with cessation of paid donors reduced the incidence of post transfusion hepatitis. Further studies also made us include tests for Malaria, Syphilis, AIDS, and Hepatitis C to make the donated blood as safe as possible to the recipient.</p>
<p><strong>What is blood?</strong></p>
<p>One can almost say that blood is that magic potion which gives life to a person. Though we have made tremendous <span id="more-491"></span>discoveries and inventions in Science, but we are not yet able to make the magic potion called Blood. Human blood has no substitute. Requirement of safe blood is increasing and regular voluntary blood donations are vital for blood transfusion services.</p>
<p><strong>Who can donate blood?</strong></p>
<p>Eligibility criteria for blood donation &#8211; Donor should be between 18-55 years of age with a weight of 50 kg or above and with his pulse rate, body temperature and blood pressure normal. Both men and women can donate. There are only few conditions in which donors are permanently excluded. The donor with a history of epilepsy, psychotic disorders, abnormal bleeding tendencies, severe asthma, cardiovascular disorders and malignancy is permanently unfit for blood donation. Donors suffering from diseases like hepatitis, malaria, measles, mumps, and syphilis may donate blood after full recovery with a 3-6 months gap. Also people who have undergone surgery or blood transfusion may safely donate blood after 6-12 months. For women donors who are pregnant or lactating, blood is not taken from them as their iron reserves are already on the lower side.</p>
<p><strong>How much blood can be taken?</strong></p>
<p>Our body has 5.5 liters of blood of which only 350 ml &#8211; 450 ml of blood is taken depending upon the weight of the donor. Majority of healthy adults can tolerate withdrawal of one unit of blood. The withdrawn blood volume is restored within 24 hours and the hemoglobin and cell components are restored in 2 months. Therefore it is safe to donate blood every three months.</p>
<p><strong>What is done with the blood collected?</strong></p>
<p>The blood collected is stored in sterile, progeny free containers with anticoagulants like CPDA or CPDA with SAGM. This prevents clotting and provides nutrition for the cells. This blood is stored at 2-6 C or -20 C depending on the component prepared. Donated blood undergoes various tests like blood grouping, antibody detection, testing of infections like hepatitis, AIDS, Malaria, syphilis and before it reaches the recipient it undergoes compatibility testing with the recipient’s blood.</p>
<p><strong>Modern Blood Transfusion Practice</strong></p>
<p>Modern blood transfusion basically deals with the optimal use of one unit of blood. One unit of whole blood is separated into components, making it available to different patients according to their requirement. Thus, one unit of blood is converted into a packed cell volume, fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrate, cryoprecipitate and granulocytes concentrate.</p>
<p>Another important practice is aphaeresis. This causes separation of only the desired component of blood from the donor and returns the remaining constituent back to the donor. This technique is also used for the remaining pathological substance in patients.</p>
<p>Withdrawal of blood for transfusion is regarded as a safe procedure now and blood donor has emerged as the single most vital link.</p>

This is the face of alcohol and what it does to you. That&#8217;s why I call it the drunken man&#8217;s drink. Drinking alcohol is one of the worst things anyone can do to his health. It causes so many health problems such as vitamin deficiency, skin problems, obesity, stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease, fetal alcohol syndrome, cirrhosis or scarring of the liver, cancer of the esophagus, mouth, throat, and larynx.</p>
<p>Drinking alcohol ages you by making you look older than you really are. You can definitely tell the difference between someone who drinks alcohol and someone who doesn&#8217;t. If you don&#8217;t drink alcohol your skin will thank you for it and you will look much younger.<br />

Some people say that drinking alcohol such as wine is good for your health, but only if you have it in moderation. But that&#8217;s the real problem with alcohol, i.e. it&#8217;s hard to drink it in moderation because of its addicting nature. You can do other things to keep your heart healthy that don&#8217;t risk an addiction.</p>
<p>Alcohol causes so many other problems for society too. Drinking and driving is a very big problem. Many people have lost their lives in accidents because of the involvement of someone who is driving while he’s drunk. There are commercials and organizations that put the word out continually that not to drive under the influence of alcohol, but it continues to fall upon dead ears. One of the so called solutions is to get a designated driver before you go out to drink. People believe that they don&#8217;t need a designated driver because they do not plan to get drunk, but sadly it all comes back to addiction. Some people take one drink and they get completely drunk, while others may take more than a drink, and still be normal.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t plan to get drunk, then you won&#8217;t appoint a designated driver. But rarely does a person drink just a single glass of alcohol; it is usually done in plenty of them. Drinking clouds your judgment and debars you from thinking properly, thereby making you irresponsible.</p>
<p>There are also bars where people go to drink alcohol on a regular basis. It is not practical to think that each and every person who frequently visits a bar will appoint a designated driver. They drive themselves there and for the most part they will drive themselves home. By doing this, they are risking not only their own life, but also the lives of other commuters on road.</p>
<p>Alcohol is always advertised in a fun way, it is associated with having a good time. Just watch the commercials on television and you see alcohol companies sponsoring many of the sporting events. I really believe this to be hypocritical. If you drink, you can in no way be able to play sports. Drinking alcohol is totally the opposite of what sports are supposed to stand for. They are aspiring and help you to be mentally, physically, and emotionally fit, teach you to overcome any kind of obstacle to achieve your goals, help you in being athletic and in good shape and health and teach you how to compete and to win. None of this is possible when alcohol is in the picture.<br />
The best way to protect your health and your well-being is not to drink at all and encourage others to do the same. Doesn&#8217;t that make more sense?</p>

Many reasons lead to the causes of liver damage in people. These mainly include our poor eating habits and inefficiency in maintaining a good day-to-day routine.</p>
<p>Sleeping too late and waking up late in the morning is the main reason, followed by others like, not urinating in the morning, too much eating, skipping breakfast, consuming too much of medication and also the consumption of preservatives, additives, food coloring and artificial sweetener. Apart from this, consuming unhealthy cooking oil also causes liver damage. In fact, we should reduce the use of cooking oils for frying purposes as much as possible, even if they include the best cooking oils like olive oil. Consumption of fried food <span id="more-483"></span>when your body is tired should be avoided and you should prefer to have them only when you are completely fit. Apart from fried food, overly done food also adds to the causes of liver damage. Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts and fried veggies should be consumed in one sitting without having to store them to be consumed later.</p>
<p>We should try to prevent this without necessarily spending more. Adapting a good daily lifestyle and eating habits is all we need.</p>
<p>As we talk about good eating habits being necessary aspects for one to maintain a good liver, the time conditions that accompany these eating habits are also of primary importance. Our bodies need to absorb and get rid of necessary chemicals according to a schedule. Not doing it in a proper way and at appropriate times is equivalent to not doing it at all, because,</p>
<p>At evening, between 9-11 pm, is the time for eliminating unnecessary toxic chemicals i.e. detoxification from the antibody system i.e. the lymph nodes. This time duration should be spent by relaxing or listening to music. If during this time one is still in an unrelaxed state such as socializing, drinking, eating out etc., this will have a negative impact on the health.</p>
<p>After this, between 11pm – 1am is the detoxification period in the liver, and ideally should be done in a deep sleep state.</p>
<p>The early morning period i.e. between 1 &#8211; 3am is the detoxification in the gall bladder, also ideally done in a deep sleep state.</p>
<p>Morning 3 – 5am is the period for detoxification in the lungs, so spending this time walking or jogging in fresh air proves to be beneficial. There can sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time since the detoxification process has reached the respiratory tract. <p>But, have you ever wondered why people get angry.  If you go and ask somebody why the other person is angry, they would say he is mad, and he only knows to get angry.  But that is not the actual reason.  Anger can be caused due to two main reasons.  One is hereditary. And the other is acquired.  In case of hereditary, either one or both the parents are disposed towards anger.  And in case of acquired anger, the child from childhood is constantly exposed to anger.  Where the child assumes that, if he wants to get something done, the only way is to get angry.  For example, when there is a lot of commotion at home, where one person does not respect the other, the child also feels the same, that it is alright, to get angry as far as he gets his way going.<br />
